16 Year in review Our year in review Take a look at IET highlights from 2018… Cyber Careers Show Demand for cyber security skills is set to rocket in the next five years. So we teamed up with Cyber Security Challenge UK to host an event showcasing the varied and lucrative roles on offer. We added new search technology to IET.tv, enabling users to navigate to individual words and phrases within a video. JANUARY After winning our £350,000 A F Harvey Research Prize, Professor Rui L Reis from the University of Minho, Portugal, gave a lecture sharing his work on tissue engineering. A series of Think BIG Health events started in April, bringing together specialists to discuss technical solutions to future healthcare challenges. Certification mark for electricians The UK Intellectual Property Office gave us approval for our first ever Certification Mark for Registered Professional Electricians (RPE). MARCH At an Electrical Engineering Academic Forum in China, researchers, academics and peers from the China Electric Power Research Institute discussed a greener, smarter energy internet. MAY Project supporting rural India The IET Future of Mobility and Transport Panel began working with social enterprise Innovant and technology partner Aeris Communications on Project IMPACT. The project involves developing cost effective and scalable technical solutions for agriculture, energy, waste management and environment spaces in rural India. Honorary Fellow will.i.am and futurist Brian David Johnson gave an inspiring book talk and Q&A session for members and their families at IET London: Savoy Place. 150 students and apprentices – recipients of our 2018 scholarships and bursaries – attended a celebration ceremony at Savoy Place. FIRST® LEGO® League UK and Ireland final The Hydro DynamicsSM challenge season saw the biggest UK and Ireland final yet, with 54 teams of schoolchildren attending the event. Many reported that they’d learned more about programming and coding, and 95% said their teamwork skills had improved thanks to the competition. FEBRUARY Inspec Analytics We launched Inspec Analytics, a powerful new research intelligence tool, based on our database Inspec. The tool enables institutions and researchers to make strategic decisions on the direction of their research, by allowing them to monitor their research output compared to other institutions and track global trends for over 12,000 research topics. We started rolling out Microsoft Office 365 as a communication tool for our volunteers. APRIL #SmashStereotypesToBits campaign We ran a video campaign aimed at challenging industry stereotypes that may be stifling young people’s career choices. The video featured former Young Woman Engineer of the Year winners and finalists using their skills to have a unique pillow fight. Parentorial with Mumsnet A study we commissioned showed that 26% of parents of school age children agree that their own lack of confidence in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) has affected their children’s proficiency in this area. We collaborated with Mumsnet to host a ‘Parentorial’, providing support to parents who want to encourage their children in STEM subjects. IET Academy launched, offering new flexible elearning courses for engineers and technologists. 200 former members from the Society of Professional Engineers joined us for their professional development and registration needs.
