19 Member updates Member feedback drives development of online community A recent survey asking IET members what they want from their online community revealed that access to knowledge and information is a top priority. Our online platform Engineering Communities (formerly known as MyCommunity) was conceived as a professional networking site for the engineering and technology community, designed to connect engineers around the world and provide a home for our local and technical networks. After six years, we decided it was time to review the purpose and direction for the online community, so circulated a survey to gather feedback from members. Our interest was in all of the communities that IET members access, not just Engineering Communities – and members’ motivations for participating in them. Around half of the individuals that responded to the survey indicated that they use online communities in some way, and of those, around half use them to support their work. Respondents said that the most important things that an online community could do for them was: – – enable them to stay current on best practice – – help them find answers to questions – – allow them to participate in discussions “Wanting access to knowledge and information” came out most strongly as a motivator for using online communities, followed by the desires to “keep up to date” and “gather information and feedback”. Many also said they used their communities to “ask and answer questions” and “give and receive help”. In light of this feedback, we’ll be developing Engineering Communities so that it becomes more of a community of practice – a space for sharing information and experiences, so that members can learn from each other and develop both personally and professionally.
