21 Engineering achievements Meet our 2018 Honorary Fellows Congratulations to our new Honorary Fellows who were elected by the Board of Trustees in 2018 for outstanding contributions to the engineering profession. Trevor Grimshaw BA Trevor has played a key role in developments in the UK’s electricity industry. He started his career with the Central Electricity Generating Board, commissioning and operating power stations, before moving into an emergency planning role for nuclear power. Following the Chernobyl disaster, he joined a team in the Ukraine, helping to change operational culture to prevent another accident. During the privatisation of the electricity industry, Trevor played a major role in forming what became British Energy. He became Head of Operational Trading for the company, where he was responsible for nearly a quarter of the electricity supply across England, Scotland and Wales. After retiring from British Energy, Trevor worked as a consultant, advising on transitions from state utilities to commercial enterprises. He took full retirement 10 years ago, but continues to volunteer for the IET. Dame Judith Hackitt DBE FREng Dame Judith is Chair of the manufacturing trade body EEF and a former Chair of the Health and Safety Executive. She was made a Dame in the 2016 New Year Honours for being a role model for women, as well as for services to health and safety and engineering. Dame Judith began her career as a chemical engineer and worked in the chemicals manufacturing industry for 23 years before joining the Chemical Industries Association. She became Director General there and then worked in Brussels for the European Chemical Industry Association. She was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2010 and currently chairs its External Affairs Committee. She is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, where she is also a member of Council and served as President between 2013-14. Professor Zhenya Liu FREng Professor Liu is an expert in energy and electric power technologies, and a leader in areas of ultra-high-voltage power grid and global energy interconnection. He actively promotes global energy interconnection as a solution for combating global challenges, environmental pollution and energy resource constraints, and has contributed to the 2030 sustainable development agenda of the United Nations. Professor Liu is currently the Chairman of the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organisation in China, and the Chairman of the China Electricity Council. He has served as Chairman and President of State Grid Corporation of China, and in this role, introduced and organised research on ultra-high-voltage technologies. Our Honorary Fellows were among a number of engineering and technology professionals recognised at the IET Achievement Awards ceremony at The Brewery in November.
