3 Member News March 2019 Welcome to Member News I’m delighted to introduce you to the very first edition of Member News featuring a fresh, new look for the IET. Both Member News and our new website are among the very first items to display our re- engineered brand since it was launched at the end of January 2019. We are planning to roll out the brand in phases over the next few months. Following feedback from members, volunteers and other stakeholders, it was evident that our old branding didn’t truly reflect the breadth and impact of what we do to engineer a better world and hadn’t kept pace with digital changes in particular. We’re still the same institution – our vision, mission and values are the same – but we’ve been working with our members to create a new brand structure and visual identity that’s fit for the future and is more appealing to our audiences. Our new logo includes an equals sign, which shows our focus and impact on delivering the vision to ‘engineer a better world’. When you’re next online, please visit our new website. The website’s designed to be more user friendly, making it easier to navigate and find the information and resources that matter to you. Read more about these developments on page 6. In this edition of Member News, we highlight some of the topics covered at recent events that are making a real impact on the way in which we live our lives, including how artificial intelligence and big data are helping to shape the future of healthcare and the communities in which we live. We also feature some truly inspirational engineering ambassadors including the IET’s Michelle Richmond, who recently received a MBE, and our 2018 Honorary Fellows (page 21). At the Achievement Awards in 2018, IET volunteer Darren Williams, a Welding Systems Manager at TWI Ltd received the IET Paul Fletcher Award for his contribution to the engineering community and Sophie Harker, an Aerodynamics and Performance Engineer for BAE Systems’ Concepts and Technology team won the Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award 2018. Darren and Sophie are both eager to inspire more young people into engineering and technology careers. You can read their stories on pages 20 and 22.
