Presented by national newsreader, Natasha Kaplinsky, Year of Engineering looks at jobs available in modern engineering and how collaboratively more can be done to inspire the next generation of talent. In one interview, Nusrat Ghani MP, Minister for the Year of Engineering and David Lakin, Head of Education at the IET, discuss the objectives behind the Year of Engineering. They explore what needs to be done in schools to develop STEM programmes and encourage more diversity in the profession. The full programme is available to watch on our website at: theiet.org/mn-itn Public Affairs update 2018 was a busy year for the IET Public Affairs team with lots of engagement with parliamentarians, civil servants and members of the Devolved Administrations. We ended the year with a joint parliamentary reception at the House of Commons to commemorate the Year of Engineering. Young engineers from our Engineers of the Future scheme, run in conjunction with LEGO® Education, showcased their inventions to Members of Parliament (MPs) and Peers. In December, we welcomed Nusrat Ghani MP, Minister for the Year of Engineering campaign, and Stephen Metcalfe MP, to the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards. Earlier in the year, we also worked closely with the Scottish and Welsh Assemblies, holding events and engaging with elected politicians. Engineers in top five of most trusted professions A new league table has revealed that engineering is the fourth most trusted profession in the UK. The IET has been working with the 2018 Ipsos MORI Veracity Index, which has been tracking Briton’s trust in key professions since the 1980s, to have engineering included for the very first time. The profession, which employs one in five people in the UK (EngineeringUK), is seen as trustworthy by 87% of the population, closely following nurses, doctors and teachers. Trust is especially high amongst the UK’s graduates (91%) which is vital because of the need for increasing numbers of qualified engineering professionals across the UK.
