8 Inspiring future engineers Dotty wins opportunity to engineer a music video 10-year-old Dorethea (Dotty), from Rossendale in Lancashire, experienced what it’s like to engineer and direct a music video in November, after winning our ‘Lights, Camera, Action!’ competition. Back in September, we teamed up with children’s television show Blue Peter to offer young people the chance to produce their very own music video for British pop-rock band New Hope Club. Dotty saw off competition from hundreds of applicants with her creative entry, which shows a young girl in her bedroom drawing the Christmas she wishes she could have, featuring New Hope Club. This vision is then magically brought to life with the band’s help. The competition was launched to raise awareness of the exciting work that engineers do within the music and entertainment industry. Dotty and two runners up – Lyla from Buckinghamshire and Freya from Leeds – enjoyed an immersive and practical day, receiving mentorship from the on-set engineers for New Hope Club’s new music video, learning about careers in engineering and spending time with the band. Run exclusively through Blue Peter, entrants were asked to submit a storyboard for a scene within the video, write a paragraph about their favourite engineer and describe how their invention has inspired them. Dotty’s engineering inspiration was Dorothée Pullinger, for her advocacy in inspiring more women into engineering through apprenticeship schemes. The competition was judged by members of the IET, including Orla Murphy CEng MIET (engineer, musician and IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year 2015), New Hope Club’s team and Blue Peter Presenter Radzi Chinyanganya. The winner’s design was then incorporated into the final video for the band’s cover of the Christmas classic, All I Want For Christmas. On being announced the winner, Dotty said: I’m so excited to have won the ‘Lights, Camera, Action!’ competition… I’ve always been interested in how things work, and I like being creative, so this competition was perfect!” Competition judge Orla Murphy added: “We saw a phenomenal response to the ‘Lights, Camera, Action!’ competition, with hundreds of very high quality entries. As an engineer and musician, it’s fantastic to see young people demonstrating their creativity through engineering and we hope this competition has shown young people the variety of careers there are in engineering, including the music and audio industry.” New Hope Club’s All I Want For Christmas video was launched on Blue Peter on 6 December and was performed live on 20 December.
