Meet one of our Horizons winners Kwabena Osei-Dompreh MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Nottingham Engineering Horizons Bursary supported by Ruth and Nigel Fine Kwabena, 20, lives with his mother and sisters in Dagenham. At school, he was always good at maths and physics, and found a way to put these subjects to practical use when he discovered engineering during sixth form. He completed his second year at university with a 2:1, and chose to specialise in Renewable Energy Systems in his third year. How has an IET bursary helped Kwabena? Kwabena works part-time at a Sainsbury’s in Nottingham. He found his first year difficult, as he had to juggle his part-time job with a university workload. His bursary has helped him to work fewer hours, and helped to take pressure off his mother, who works as a nurse to support not only Kwabena and his sisters, but her siblings and their children in Ghana. What’s next for Kwabena? After his third year, he would like to go on a summer placement. It’s still a while away, but he’ll start thinking about the type of placement soon – companies like Siemens, Rolls Royce and GSK are regulars on the Nottingham campus, and Kwabena says he’s surprised that firms he thought of as chemical engineering companies (like GSK) were just as interested in electrical engineers. 2018 in review Thank you Our donors A look ahead
