Volunteers Member News July 2019 25 New Young Professional Ambassador role We recently created a new volunteer role, Young Professional Ambassador, to recognise young professional engineers and technicians and the fantastic work they’re doing in the engineering community. There is already a Facebook group of over 70 young professionals who are sharing best practice, good news stories and challenges they need help to overcome. These individuals are active in On Campus groups, their own local or technical network or have come to the IET through competitions like Present Around The World or the Global Challenge. Our new role offers these young professionals and others the opportunity to inspire more people towards volunteering and getting involved with the IET. Anthony James, Chair of the IET Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Young Professionals Network, has recently become a Young Professional Ambassador. He says: It has allowed me to connect with a global network of engineers that I’d never have imagined possible before, giving me new colleagues and friends. I’ve also been able to increase my engagement with the local, national and international engineering community, to give back and inspire future generations of engineers.” If you are interested in becoming a Young Professional Ambassador, please contact youngprofessionals@theiet.org. You must be aged between 18-35 to be eligible. Anna wins People’s Choice Award Dr Anna Bonne is our Transport Lead. She is thrilled to have won the Smart Transportation & Mobility 2019 People’s Choice Award for her efforts to develop smart mobility across Europe. However, Anna was quick to point out that her role is to facilitate “the hard work and expertise” of the volunteer members of several multidisciplinary working groups, such as the IET Mobility as a Service (MaaS) group. At the end of March, the MaaS group produced a ground- breaking report that aims to support better decision-making about access to transport: Could Mobility as a Service solve our transport problems? “I always put as much as I can into my work, so it’s nice to be recognised for making a difference in smart mobility,” said Anna. But I certainly couldn’t do it without the commitment and dedication of my amazing network of volunteers – the experts, panels and working groups who freely give up their time for the good of society and to further the aims of the IET. I’m very privileged to work with them all.” To find out more, download the report from our website at theiet.org/MaaS-report If you are interested in getting involved in our impact and society activities, please email volunteer@theiet.org Dr Anna Bonne, IET Transport Lead
