27 From the engineering community Member News July 2019 Young professionals take over Instagram Earlier this year, engineering young professionals took over the IET’s Instagram page stories to give our followers an insight into their day-to-day lives and inspire younger students. Marnie McKay, an engineering student from Glasgow showed us around her university, including a lecture and her IET On Campus group. Ivan Ling, a former On Campus committee member from Malaysia, who is now a staff member at University of Southampton Malaysia, showed us some amazing examples of engineering projects that are being worked on. Both stories had over 1,000 people engaging with them and helped to increase the IET’s Instagram page followers to over 3,000. Keep an eye out for future Instagram takeovers by following @TheIET. Marnie McKay, an engineering student from University of Glasgow and Ivan Ling, a lecturer and researcher at University of Southampton Malaysia Our social media activities continue to highlight the achievements of engineers and the wider profession. We’ve celebrated members reaching their career goals, and industry and academia creating technologies which can change lives… #EngineeringChangesLives From Segways to Lamborghinis, we’ve teamed up with actor David Proud to see what the future might look like for disabled people and assistive technology. In the first of our series, David takes us on trip around Naidex – Europe’s most comprehensive disability and independent living event – to highlight his top picks from the exhibition. Keep up with the series – and conversations around it – by following #EngineeringChangesLives. #MyIETStory We’re recognising some brilliant engineering students through our awards programme, but what do they go on to do? Oishi Deb MIET featured across our social media pages in May, sharing her professional journey since winning an IET award. If you’ve had a story published by us – in Member News or elsewhere – share it on social media using #MyIETStory. #EngineeringRecognition Here at the IET, we are encouraging more conversation on social media around professional registration to develop a supportive online community and celebrate each other’s successes. If you’ve recently become professionally registered, share your success by tagging #EngineeringRecognition. Or if you’ve just started out on your journey to professional registration, you can use this hashtag to ask questions and receive support from your peers. #IAmAnEngineer We’re challenging outdated and unhelpful stereotypes associated with engineering by launching a new video campaign #IAmAnEngineer. Keep a look out for the launch on International Women in Engineering Day (23 June 2019). Join the conversation by following our hashtags and @TheIET. Social round up IET @TheIET “Receiving recognition from a prestigious institution like the IET has really helped me to get noticed. It’s validated my credibility and provided me with opportunities to connect with other engineering professionals.” Oishi Deb has gone on to great things since receiving the IET award, take a look: http://ow.ly/ xY6v50pKsNL #MyIETStory
