3 Member News July 2019 Welcome to Member News I’m always very interested in hearing about the achievements of our Fellows and Members, and how they are using their experiences to champion the engineering and technology profession and the role we play in engineering a better world. There are many great examples in this issue. Entries for this year’s IET Innovation Awards are now open and the submission deadline is 5 July 2019. On page 11 we look back at some of the winning entries from previous years and find out how these designs have gone on to make a real impact in areas including water desalination, supermarket refrigeration, food and plastic waste reduction and agriculture. A large part of the work we do is to share knowledge and expertise with our members and the wider engineering community. This year marks a special 50th anniversary milestone for our research database, Inspec. Since its beginnings in 1969, Inspec has evolved to become one of the most authoritative indexing databases for subject-specific and interdisciplinary research in the global fields of engineering, physics and computer science. We’re continuing to develop new capabilities for the platform through Inspec Analytics. More information is available on page 4. To ensure that we remain relevant and effective in delivering our vision and mission in years to come, we unveiled a new strategic framework for the IET. The framework is the result of work with the IET’s Board of Trustees and members and focuses on how we can meet the future needs of engineers and technologists, the organisations in which they work and wider society. We’re also progressing plans for our 150th anniversary celebration in 2021 which builds on this framework and you can read more in the Council Update on page 7. This issue provides suggestions on how you can get involved and champion the profession. Please encourage your friends and family to take part in our International Engineering and Technology Photographer of the Year competition this year, which aims to challenge public misconceptions about our inspiring profession (see page 21). Finally, we’d like to hear your feedback on Member News. If you have any comments on this issue, please email them to membernews@theiet.org.
