Member News July 2019 YWE Award finalists hit the airwaves The UK’s National Apprenticeship Week and British Science Week, which both took place earlier this year, were opportunities for IET ambassadors to raise awareness of STEM careers. Kate Self, Young Woman Engineer of the Year (YWE) 2018 finalist and BT apprentice, appeared in regional interviews promoting her apprenticeship and championing vocational routes into engineering. During British Science Week, Sophie Harker, YWE 2018 winner and aspiring astronaut, took part in national and regional broadcast interviews. She reflected on how scientific and engineering breakthroughs have the power to inspire a nation and shape future careers in the field. Could you represent the IET in the media? We’d love to hear from you – email communications@theiet.org Celebrating 50 years of Inspec The IET’s research database Inspec has been delivering access to engineering intelligence since 1969. It’s gained a reputation for being one of the most authoritative tools for accessing engineering, physics and computer science literature, and it’s used by prestigious institutions (and their tens of thousands of members) around the world. More recently we have developed Inspec Analytics, a research intelligence tool which works with Inspec to allow users to understand their place in a global research landscape, measure research impact and make strategic decisions about the direction of their projects. The campaign was launched by the British Council back in January 2018, to coincide with past UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s official visit to the country. Its aim is to support individuals with their English language proficiency, as a means of achieving personal and professional goals. Our PATW competition fits into the campaign by encouraging engineering students and young professionals to develop their presentation skills and showcase them to a global audience.
