Updates from governance Member News July 2019 From the President It seems a while ago now, but I was delighted to see so many IET members representing different engineering and technology sectors at the IET Annual Dinner in February. It was a great evening, which you can read more about on the next page. I also had the opportunity to meet our latest award recipients and their supporters at a special scholarships and bursaries ceremony in February. Each year the IET takes part in the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham and this year was no exception. This is the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in the UK and I was impressed by the enthusiasm and knowledge of the young people I spoke to there. In March I met Professor Mário G. Silveirinha, winner of the 2018 IET A F Harvey Engineering Research Prize. Professor Silveirinha travelled to London from Lisbon to receive his award and deliver a talk on time reversal symmetry breaking with motion. In April I travelled to Hong Kong where I met Hong Kong Local Network members and volunteers. Hong Kong has the largest local network outside the UK and the community is incredibly active, arranging over 100 events each year. This is a phenomenal achievement and I’d like to thank everyone who works hard year- round to encourage member participation in this region. The Hong Kong Local Network has arranged flagship events, including the Informatics and Control Technologies Conference which I was invited to open this year. I also delivered my President’s address and visited Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks and Hong Kong Cyberport – home to over 1,000 digital technology companies. Looking ahead, I’m preparing to travel to India in August to speak at the IET Internet of Things Congress. More details on the conference are available at iotindiacongress.com. Mike Carr OBE FREng BSc(Eng) HonDTech CEng FIET, IET President Council Update By Professor C Muthamizhchelvan FIET and Patrick Mason CEng MIET Council met in March to discuss, amongst other things, several reports from IET committees and working parties, including a report on ‘Rebuilding the Public Image of the Engineering Professions’. Following discussion in June 2018, Council agreed to develop its ideas on how the image of the profession can be rebuilt, to reflect the ever changing environment that our members work in. In March, Council agreed on a discussion paper with recommendations, which has now been submitted to the Board of Trustees. Another item on the agenda in March was plans for the IET’s 150th anniversary in 2021. IET Director of International Strategic Marketing and Engagement, Hilary Lambert, presented proposals for the celebrations, which fell into three categories – celebration, legacy and inspiration. Council divided into groups to discuss the proposals and provide feedback and further ideas. If you have any comments or questions for Council, please send them to council@theiet.org Mike Carr with IET Community Manager for Hong Kong Dodi Mak 7
