What you need to do for the 2018 CPD review With 2018 coming to an end, the IET is calling for Members to submit their year’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records for review. David Aylett, IET Senior Product Advisor for CPD, answers some common questions on the process. Why should I send my CPD records to the IET? It’s a way of upholding the Rules of Conduct you agreed to as an IET Member, showing that you’re committed to keeping your engineering knowledge and skills up to date through planned professional development. If you’re a professionally registered engineer, you’ll be proving that you’re maintaining your competences, as required by the UK Engineering Council. In short, this practice of maintaining your knowledge and skills – and providing evidence – gives value to your status as an IET Member and a professional engineer. So once you’ve finished logging your CPD records for 2018, take that final step and send your records to us. What happens once my records have been submitted? We’ll review a random selection of CPD records. If yours are selected, we will provide you with feedback and advice. Also, if you submit your records via the IET’s Career Manager system, you’ll get access to our customised dashboard. This allows you to compare the amount and types of activities you’ve undertaken with that of your peers, giving you ideas for future CPD activities. The dashboard also allows the IET to see what most interests members and helps us improve our service to you. I’m using Career Manager – can’t the IET automatically see everything I enter on the system? No. We respect your privacy – so we want you to tell us when you’re ready for us to review your CPD records. This means you choose what you want us to see and when you wish to make it available to us. How do I submit my CPD records? In Career Manager, simply choose the option ‘Submit my annual CPD Declaration’ from the CPD menu and follow the guidance from there. We would like to receive this in the first quarter of 2019, but we will accept your CPD at any time over the 12 months. Still have questions?
