The Society of Professional Engineers (SPE) closed earlier this year, following a review of its long-term sustainability. Representatives of SPE identified the IET as a natural home for their members and since that time, the IET has been in discussions with the organisation to explore the feasibility of SPE members transferring their membership and Engineering Council registration to us. As a result of these discussions, we presented an offer which considered the admittance of SPE members. This included, among other considerations, that individuals awarded Fellow status by SPE (FSPE) be directly transferred to the IET. For other membership categories, such as MSPE, individuals would be able to transfer to TMIET or MIET at the IET’s discretion. With the membership review completed, we sent communications to former SPE members and Fellows inviting them to consider a six- month trial IET membership. The trial offer was a great success: of the 550 individuals contacted during the campaign, over 260 have become members. These members can now apply for Engineering Council registration, as an unfortunate result of the closure of SPE was the cessation of the PEng MSPE and PEng FSPE post-nominals. To assist with this process, we are offering a free pre- registration assessment to eligible former SPE members. The IET is delighted to be able to lend its support and we invite you to join us in extending a warm welcome to our newest members. November 2018 – Member News www.theiet.org/member-news
