Printed by Wyndeham Group UK ISS N 1752-5594 Welcome Welcome to Member News. M any of the stories featured in this edition of Member News highlight the achievements of individuals and groups in supporting our members and the engineering profession. In this issue we meet the first of our IET Volunteer Core Values Award winners – Alan Chater (Integrity Award), Frank Lewis (Excellence Award) and Rich Blair, Lauren Aves and Lily Welch who have won the Teamwork Award. We also find out who’s on the shortlist for this year’s IET Achievement Awards, which take place on 14 November in London. The IET Brunei Darassalam Local Network reached its 20th anniversary last year. IET members recently marked the occasion with an anniversary dinner attended by the Minister of Development for the Brunei Government. Our congratulations go to the IET Hong Kong Local Network too, which celebrates its 30th anniversary. IET Past President Nick Winser spoke at the celebration dinner in July (see page 5). 2018 is also the UK Government’s Year of Engineering supported by Nusrat Ghani MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport with responsibility for the Year of Engineering campaign. The campaign aims to transform perceptions and show young people what an engineering career can offer. According to research conducted by the IET, just 26% of girls are looking to pursue a career in STEM compared to 43% of boys. With this in mind, we launched a video campaign on social media to ‘smash engineering stereotypes to bits’. The video features past IET Young Women Engineer of the Year finalists and has been viewed more than 600,000 times. We launched a series of new EngShorts videos, which focus on key topics that affect society. Council Chair Colin Davis provides an insight into the activities Council members have focused on over the past few months (see page 7). Finally, thank you to all members who completed our recent survey on the Member News print edition. In response to feedback, we have added section headings signposting some of our activities related to engineering sectors. This month we have highlighted key IET events on Transport (page 14-15) and we are looking to implement more of your suggestions in future editions.
