30 Member News – November 2018 www.theiet.org/events MEMBER NEWS Events Shortlist announced for IET Achievement Awards The shortlists are in for our Achievement Awards, highlighting IET members (and non-members) who are in the running for various awards. Our prestigious Volunteer Medal, which recognises major and outstanding contributions from our volunteer members, has a shortlist of not three but four finalists due to the quality of this year’s nominations. Finalists include: n  Colin Arthur MIET, a member of the Board of Trustees, who started out as a competitor in our Present Around The World (PATW) competition and has since taken on various voluntary roles. n  John Harvey FIET, a dedicated and long- serving member of the IET Solent Local Network. n  Eur Ing Thomas Hlaing CEng MIET, who has risen through the ranks of IET volunteering, from the East Midlands Local Network while at university to the Board of Trustees. n  Tan Eng Hwa MIET, who has successfully revamped and led the Young Professional Singapore Network to maintain its relevance in an ever-changing market, amongst many other projects. We’ve also announced the shortlist for the Technician and Armed Forces Technician of the Year Awards, as well as an all-female finalist line-up for the Apprentice of the Year Award. This year’s ceremony features internationally acclaimed science author, public speaker and TV personality Dr Emily Grossman as host. She is best known for her role as Resident Science Expert on the Alan Titchmarsh Show and Sky1’s Duck Quacks Don’t Echo, as well as her inspirational talks at local schools and live events including the Cheltenham Science Festival. The IET Achievement Awards will take place on Wednesday 14 November 2018 at The Brewery, London. It’s free to attend and includes a networking drinks reception after the ceremony. Women in Engineering exhibition A new exhibition at IET London: Savoy Place aims to raise public awareness of women engineers, and inspire both current and future engineering and technology professionals. Installations in the Watson-Watt room take a retrospective look at the rich history of women in engineering, celebrating the trailblazers, women on the move and discoveries made by women. An exhibit in the Mountbatten room showcases modern day discoveries by women, celebrates current women engineers and demonstrates the breadth of engineering careers available through inspiring case studies.
