AF Amistad High School Family Handbook 2017-2018 | 7 Leadership: AFAHS scholars are leaders in their various communities: school, neighborhood, and city. AFAHS scholars, by virtue of their outstanding achievement and upstanding characters, recognize an obligation to give back to their community and contribute to a better world. Independence: Independent scholars adopt the mindset that achievement is fundamentally their own responsibility. Independent scholars are proactive. They are attentive and alert in class, frequently ask questions, know how to identify when they are struggling, and seek teachers out for extra help. Independent scholars are oriented toward solving problems by seeking out the best resources and asking for help. Excellence: True character includes understanding the impact of your actions, and setting a standard for yourself that is consistently higher than before. Scholars with strong character understand that their work and their actions are a reflection of themselves, and thus, pursue excellence with tenacity.
