To give you a sense of their plight, an individual who picks tomatoes in Florida has to pick an average of nearly 5,000 lbs. per day to earn minimum wage. Due to the shortage of affordable housing in Immokalee, low-income families are often forced to pay more than 70% of their income to live with strangers in over-priced, unsafe, and overcrowded trailers- many with limited access to a shower or toilet. As many as 12-18 people (including children) will live in one dilapidated, pest and mold-infested trailer.Monarca, a 50-acre affordable rental housing community will serve the low socio-economic population in this region.
