Recognizing that systemic racism and discrimination persist, we believe that a collaborative effort founded upon Persistence, Empathy, Education, and Resilience (P.E.E.R.) is essential to create a more inclusive and equitable educational environment particularly for Black students, families, and staff.Focus Area: Equity and Racial/Social Justice Issues in SchoolsThe N Word and What to do About it, a Love Offering Room: Palms 8Presenter: Presenter:ZethaNobles MisteeGuzman Director of Equity, Access and AchievementEquity, Access and Achievement Teacher New Haven Unified School District New Haven Unified School District Abstract: We will offer multiple strategies and resources to address racial equity by honoring the dignity of African American students. Even if African American families or others use the word themselves, it should not be used in schools. There are significant studies that show that dignity violations such as the ones African American students face in schools cause poor school performance. When we focus on ways to honor dignity, our schools change the relationship with students and school performance and overall well-being will improve. We provide resources in this workshop you can use when you are confronted with the use of the "N" word in your school.Focus Area: Equity and Racial/Social Justice Issues in SchoolsCAAASA 2024 Statewide Professional Development Summit37'
