This session brings together research and policy perspectives to examine inequities in the teacher workforce, including the 1) recruitment and retention of teachers of color, 2) student loan debt and the cost of teacher preparation, and 3) teacher shortages and the inequitable distribution of teachers.Focus Area:Equity and Racial/Social Justice Issues in SchoolsDeconstructing Whiteness & hostility in parental involvement: Room: Palms 7Strategies to increase Black family engagement in schoolsPresenter: Abstract: Black family engagement is an underutilized resource in schools. Yvette C.Latunde Programs and initiatives that bypass families in order to support students Professor/Family Engagementare less effective. Black family engagement holds promise for reducing Consultant bullying, preventing suicide and smoking cessation. It also holds promise for University of La Vernereinforcing evidenced-based practices used in schools to promote academic achievement. Unfortunately, many schools create and maintain hostile environments for families and drive them away. This session teaches practical strategies for creating a culture and climate in schools that promote the attendance and engagement of Black families.
